What is a DEXA Body Composition Scan?

DEXA stands for Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. A body composition DEXA scan accurately calculates the amount of fat, lean muscle and bone in an individual. It does this by passing very low dose x-ray beams through the body to a detector. The x-ray beams lose intensity relative to the densities of different body tissues. DEXA body composition scans are recognised as the gold standard in measuring and tracking body composition.

How often can I get DEXA body composition scans?

We know that tracking your body composition changes is critical to achieving your individual fitness goal. Every individual is different, and it is important to approach each case on a case-by-case basis. We work with you to personalise your recall period according to your training program, nutritional changes and individual goals.

How long will the scan take?

Our state-of-the-art radiology technology will only take five minutes to perform, but we will allocate extra time for positioning and consultation if you choose the consultation option.

How do I prepare for a body composition scan?

No special preparation is required. You may eat, drink and exercise as you would normally. For your convenience wear clothing that does not contain metal including underwires, zips, clips, clasps or alike and remove metal accessories prior to your appointment.

Loose fitting clothing, especially around the midsection is ideal as tight clothing can interfer with the visceral fat area measurement.

Please note if you are pregnant or if there is any chance you may be pregnant or you are under 18 years of age we are unable to scan you.

What should I expect at my body composition  appointment?

When you visit us for a body composition scan, we'll start by measuring and recording your height and weight. Next, we’ll position you on the scanner bed and place a band around your feet to maintain correct positioning. The scan itself only takes a few minutes and, during that time, we encourage you to lie back and relax while staying still. Once the scan is completed, we’ll email a copy of the results for your records. If you opt for a consultation, we will discuss the results of the analysis as well as your goals.

Do I need a consultation?

Whether you’re scheduling your first appointment or it has been awhile since your last, we recommend booking a consultation to get a comprehensive understanding of your results.

Can I get a Medicare or health fund rebate on my scan?

Currently, body composition DEXA scans do not qualify for a Medicare rebate. Some health funds may offer rebates for these scans, so it's advisable to confirm with your specific health fund. Medicare does provide rebates for bone mineral density DEXA scans for eligible individuals; however, we only offer these scans on a private payment basis without rebate.
